How Your Reasons For Doing Determines Your Level Of Happiness.

Your happiness comes from your reasons for doing whatever it is you are doing. It’s your reasons for doing it that ultimately leads to you feeling happy, satisfied and fulfilled.

When we get our first job, most people do it for the money. We fall into the trap of get a well-paying job, buy a nice house, buy a nice car, go on nice holidays etc. It’s all about the money and what money can buy us.

At some point, though, we discover having that nice house, car and those increasingly expensive holidays no longer give us the buzz they once did. So we buy more and more expensive luxuries and the thrill we feel having those new things lasts less and less.

So what really is the secret to feeling happiness, joy and fulfilment? It’s your purpose — your reasons for doing whatever it is you are doing. When you do something for someone else and you see the smile and gratitude on their face, the feeling of happiness stays with us all day. When you give a friend a piece of advice and they act on it and it enriches their lives, the feeling we have, knowing we helped them — even in a small way — is lasting.

If we are doing a job for the money, we soon begin to hate the job. We resent having to go to the office every day. Our commute becomes a drudge and we spend most of our time complaining about email, our boss and colleagues.

But if you are going into work because you are doing a job that enables people to look their best by designing great clothes for them or you design beautiful buildings that give people a comfortable and safe place to live. That’s a purpose worth going through traffic hell for every morning. It’s your mindset for doing the work that brings you joy. Not the paycheque at the end of the month.

Too often the deciding factor for taking a job is the salary. Yet, that will never bring you fulfilment, joy and happiness. Whether you do a great job or an average job you still get the same amount of money each month. But if you took a job because of what that job will enable you to do to help people live better lives, now if you do a great job your sense of fulfilment and happiness increase massively. Improving the way you work would mean more people benefit from your efforts. That’s an incentive worth getting out of bed for.

Of course, we need a certain amount of money to survive, we need to eat, to have shelter and we need to be able to move around. But a lot of what we use money for we don’t need. We just think we need because everyone else has it. I would certainly not say that money is not important. It is when it becomes your purpose. When it becomes your purpose you will never have enough. And the more money you receive, the pleasure it brings diminishes. Yet when your purpose is about giving and helping others, the joy you feel increases.

How this affects your productivity.

When you look at your projects list, what are the reasons you are doing those projects? Do you have a clear purpose for doing them? When you go to the gym what are your reasons for doing so? Why are you trying to achieve your goals? When you have a clear, higher purpose for doing everything you do, you will find your energy and passion increase. The closer that reason is to helping other people or making the world that little bit better, your sense of fulfilment will improve and so will your enthusiasm for doing the tasks or completing the projects.

This really is a simple mental shift. Rather than focusing on the material benefits to you, focus on the benefits you will give to others. Going to the gym means you are keeping yourself strong and healthy so you can be there for your family. Doing the accounts for the small business that needs your help so they can thrive and support the community by providing jobs and a service people want.

Whenever I sit down to write a blog post, record a YouTube video or podcast, in my mind I see the people I am trying to help. I have a clear vision of the difficulties they are facing and how I might be able to help them with some advice, or a new way of doing something. That’s all the motivation I need to write, record or prepare. Knowing that somewhere, maybe, I have helped someone become less stressed and be able to spend more time with the people they care about.

Every piece of work you do has a higher purpose than money or personal material benefit. It is when you focus on those higher reasons you will discover long-lasting happiness and joy and a passion and drive for what you do.

Why Drifting Through Life Will Result In A Lifetime Of Regret.

It so easy to allow ourselves to be seduced into following the prevailing currents. To allow life to push and pull us in any direction it so chooses. To follow the latest trends, to get upset by the things the faux outrage crowd are outraged about that day and to just settle for whatever life has served up for us.

The problem with this approach is that one day you are going to wake up and look back over your life and feel a huge sense of regret for not having done anything about the things you wanted to do. To have missed out on a chance to see the amazing things the world has to offer. From the canals of Venice to the Northern Lights in Norway. To have missed out on the chance to develop new skills and to have achieved something remarkable.

Sometimes, it feels like the world is against you. All the things we like are bad for us, chocolate cake, vodka cocktails and sitting down and binge-watching episodes of our favourite drama on Netflix — too much of a good thing…

Life has never been fair.

However, this is how it is meant to be. The world is not fair, Life is not fair. If you want to make an impact on the world you have to take action. You can’t write something on Facebook or Twitter and sit back and expect the world to change. It does not work like that. It takes years of writing, making your point over and over again and building a community of followers. It means consistently crafting your message and becoming better and better at what you do through deliberate practice. That’s the way life works and that is why we live in such a wonderful world and at such a wonderful time.

Find your own path.

A fulfilled life is not created by following other people. A fulfilled life is created by following your own path. It is about trying new things, no matter how crazy they may seem to other people. If you want to take a year off work and travel through the Amazonian jungle in an old 1970s Land Rover, then do it. Save the money, buy the Land Rover and just go do it. The adventure, the memories and the experience will last a lifetime and the skills you will learn along the way will make you an even better person than you already are. People will tell you if you buy an old 1970s Land Rover you will spend most of your time under the bonnet fixing something (probably true) and if you go to the Amazon you will get bitten by dangerous snakes or eaten by cannibals. They will tell you anything to stop you. Not because they care about you, but because they don’t have the courage to follow through with their dreams and they envy you.

Society wants you to live to the standard blueprint. It wants you to be ‘normal’, whatever that means in the society you live in. When you are “normal” you are predictable and you follow the rules. Most people yearn for something more than that. They want adventure, they want to be able to work from wherever they feel like working that day and they want opportunities to pursue unusual hobbies and interests without the fear of being negatively judged.

People will always judge you negatively because they envy you.

The thing is you will always be negatively judged if you veer from the norm. People will tell you-you can’t do something, or that other people have tried that and have failed (those other people are not you. Always remember that). You should just shut up and settle down to a nice Job and a quiet family life. But that might not be what you want. And if that is the case don’t let these people stop you from pursuing your dreams and ideas. If you do you will soon find you have no time left to pursue them and you will be filled with regret and disappointment.

We only get one shot. Life is not a rehearsal. It is your duty to create a remarkable life. To seek out adventure, to try new things and to leave the world a little bit better than you found it. That should be the goal. Not to live a life someone else wants you to live.

Live life with no regrets.

I’ve always liked the quote: “live life with no regrets”. That is a great way to live your life. It suggests you live life on your terms and not someone else’s and it invokes a sense of joy and happiness. Regret is poison to the soul. It erodes your confidence and it leads to misery. Don’t let it happen to you. Take some time to decide what it is you want to do with your life. What you want to achieve and what you want to learn. Then make a plan to achieve it. Once you have decided what it is you want to do and you have a plan, start doing. Start ticking off those things. Go see the sunrise in the east and the sunset in the west. Learn how to dismantle a car and rebuild it. Start learning Portuguese. Whatever it is you want to do start doing. Decide, plan, do. It’s that simple.

So whatever it is you yearn to do with your life, don’t let anyone tell you-you cannot do it. You can and even if you fail, at least you will have no regrets because you tried. “It’s better to have tried and failed than to not have tried at all”

Not trying will lead to a lifetime of regret and that is not the way to live your life.

Never Let Anyone Take You Away From Your Core Daily Disciplines.

Your core daily disciplines are the things that give you control, flexibility and freedom to live a great life. They are the things that are important to you. It could be your fitness, your self-development or your family values. If health and fitness are important to you, you will exercise regularly and eat healthily.

Your discipline ensures you go out for the run in cold wet weather or despite there being a plate of cookies on the meeting room table you refrain from eating any. If self-development is important, you allocate time every day to learn and develop the skills you want to learn. These are your core disciplines and they are based on the things that are important to you.

Choosing the easy option is the reason you don’t achieve your goals.

The reason so many people fail to achieve the things they want to achieve is that they allow other people to distract them from the things that are important to them. Your friends call you on a Thursday afternoon and invite you out for a few beers. You had planned to go to the gym, but you’ve had a hard day at work so you agree to go for a few beers. It hard to motivate yourself to go to the gym and it’s hard to say no to your friends. So you take the easy option and go for the beer.

On its own, that one night out for a few beers instead of going to the gym is going to do little harm. But the problem is not the one time, the problem is you likely regularly make those kinds of decisions. You regularly take the easy option instead of staying focused on your core values.

Being a disciplined person gains you respect from your peers.

Many years ago I worked with a guy who made it a priority to go to the gym Monday to Friday after work. He was in incredible shape and he ate clean and I mean clean — clean sources of protein and a lot of fruit, veg and nuts. On a weekend, he allowed himself the freedom to eat and drink and do whatever he liked. Interestingly, once you got to know Andy, you knew not to invite him out during the week because he would always say no. Andy got a lot of respect from the people around him. We all wished we could be like him (and look like him!).

The truth is we can all be like Andy. We can gain the respect and admiration of others and we can set an example for those people around us by not giving in to the easy decisions. By staying true to our core values and disciplines.

Don’t give other people the power to determine the course of your life.

When you allow other people to prevent you from doing what is important to you, you are giving other people control of your life.

  • If exercise and maintaining your health is important to you, you will find time every day to exercise and to each healthily. If you allow the agendas of others take your exercise time or to push you to eat unhealthily or drink too much alcohol, then you give those others control over your life.
  • If studying new skills and improving your education is important to you, yet you allow other people to change your schedule so you cannot attend your class or practice your skill, then you are giving other people control over your life.
  • If spending quality time with your family every day is important to you yet you allow your boss to keep you late at the office doing additional work, you are giving up control of your life to your boss.
  • If you are responding to work messages and calls on a weekend instead of playing with your children you are giving up control of your life to your boss, colleagues and customers.

Take responsibility and control of your life.

To take control and to take full responsibility for your life and your time You need to establish boundaries that cannot be broken by the agendas of others except in extreme circumstances. If you don’t do your daily core disciplines because you are not in the mood or you feel lazy, you are giving in to your weaker self. Stop yourself. These are your core disciplines, these are the habits and actions that will transform you from where you are today to where you want to be in the future. It’s our negative, undisciplined self trying to maintain an easy life and we must ignore that voice and pursue the goals and dreams we have for the future. You need to develop the strength and discipline to do those daily activities that will move you a step closer each day towards where you want to go.

Once you establish these boundaries, and you do not allow the wishes and agendas of others to cross those boundaries, you will start to receive respect from the people around you. People will look to you as an example to follow, people will want to be like you and people will start asking you how do you do it? Just like we all saw Andy as a shining example of how to live life. You will also start making progress towards achieving all those things you want to achieve in life.

It’s not all discipline and rigidity.

I am not suggesting you say no to everything that comes your way. It is important to have some flexibility in your life. But when pursuing the important things in your life you need to become uncompromising. Sure, if you want to keep Friday nights free so you can hang out with your friends, great, schedule that time. If you want to go out clubbing and drinking on a weekend, wonderful do it. But when Monday comes round, you get back to your focused, disciplined life and become uncompromising again. You go to the gym, you do the class, you spend time with your family and you allow nothing to get in the way of pursuing developing yourself into a better person.

That’s how you go from where you are today to where you want to be in the future.
